Toyota Prius: Rear Stabilizer Bar

Removal

REMOVAL

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

The necessary procedures (adjustment, calibration, initialization, or registration) that must be performed after parts are removed and installed, or replaced during rear stabilizer bar removal/installation are shown below.

PROCEDURE

1. REMOVE BATTERY BOX COVER (for PHEV Model)

5. REMOVE REAR STABILIZER BAR (for HEV Model 2WD)

(1) Remove the 4 bolts and rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly from the rear suspension member sub-assembly.

(2) Remove the bolt and nut, and separate the rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly from the rear stabilizer link assembly LH.

NOTICE:

Loosen the nut with the bolt secured.

(3) Remove the bolt and nut, and remove the rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly from the rear stabilizer link assembly RH.

NOTICE:

Loosen the nut with the bolt secured.

6. REMOVE REAR STABILIZER BAR (for HEV Model AWD, PHEV Model)

(1) Remove the 4 bolts and rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly from the rear suspension member sub-assembly.

(2) Remove the bolt and nut, and separate the rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly from the rear stabilizer link assembly LH.

NOTICE:

Loosen the nut with the bolt secured.

(3) Remove the bolt and nut, and remove the rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly from the rear stabilizer link assembly LH.

NOTICE:

Loosen the nut with the bolt secured.

7. REMOVE REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH

(1) Remove the nut and rear stabilizer link assembly LH from the rear trailing arm assembly.

HINT:

If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench to hold the stud bolt.

8. REMOVE REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY RH

(a) Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

Inspection

INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

1. INSPECT REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY

(a) Inspect the turning torque of the ball joint.

(1) Secure the rear stabilizer link assembly in a vise using aluminum plates.

NOTICE:

Do not overtighten the vise.

(2) Install the nut to the rear stabilizer link assembly stud.

(3) Move the stud back and forth several times. Using a torque wrench, turn the stud continuously at a rate of 3 to 5 seconds per turn and take the torque reading on the 5th turn.

(4) Turn the stud to check that the stud does not catch and there is no play.

(5) If the turning torque is not within the specified range, replace the rear stabilizer link assembly with a new one.

(b) Inspect the dust cover.

(1) Check that the dust cover is not cracked and that there is no grease on it.

(2) If the dust cover is cracked or there is grease on it, replace the rear stabilizer link assembly with a new one.

PROCEDURE

1. INSTALL REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH

(1) Install the rear stabilizer link assembly LH to the rear trailing arm assembly with the nut.

Torque:

79 N·m {806 kgf·cm, 58 ft·lbf}

HINT:

If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench to hold the stud bolt.

2. INSTALL REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY RH

3. INSTALL REAR STABILIZER BAR (for HEV Model 2WD)

Identification Mark

-

-

(1) Temporarily Install the rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly to the rear stabilizer link assembly LH with the bolt and nut.

NOTICE:

Tighten the nut with the bolt secured.

(2) Temporarily Install the rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly to the rear stabilizer link assembly RH with the bolt and nut.

NOTICE:

Tighten the nut with the bolt secured.

(3) Install the rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly to the rear suspension member sub-assembly with the 4 bolts.

Torque:

78 N·m {795 kgf·cm, 58 ft·lbf}

NOTICE:

  • Ensure that the identification mark faces the right side of the Toyota Prius vehicle.
  • Temporarily tighten the 3 bolts in the order of (A), (B) and (D), and then fully tighten the 4 bolts in the order of (C), (D), (A), and (B).

4. INSTALL REAR STABILIZER BAR (for HEV Model AWD, PHEV Model)

(1) Temporarily Install the rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly to the rear stabilizer link assembly LH with the bolt and nut.

NOTICE:

Tighten the nut with the bolt secured.

(2) Temporarily Install the rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly to the rear stabilizer link assembly RH with the bolt and nut.

NOTICE:

Tighten the nut with the bolt secured.

(3) Install the rear stabilizer bar sub-assembly to the rear suspension member sub-assembly with the 4 bolts.

Torque:

78 N·m {795 kgf·cm, 58 ft·lbf}

NOTICE:

  • Ensure that the identification mark faces the right side of the Toyota Prius vehicle.
  • Temporarily tighten the 3 bolts in the order of (C), (D) and (B), and then fully tighten the 4 bolts in the order of (A), (B), (C), and (D).

5. STABILIZE SUSPENSION

6. INSTALL REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH

(1) Fully tighten the rear stabilizer link assembly LH with the nut.

Torque:

79 N·m {806 kgf·cm, 58 ft·lbf}

NOTICE:

Tighten the nut with the bolt secured.
