Toyota Prius: Front Speed Sensor

Removal

REMOVAL

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

The necessary procedures (adjustment, calibration, initialization or registration) that must be performed after parts are removed and installed, or replaced during front speed sensor removal/installation are shown below.

HINT:

  • Use the same procedure for the RH side and LH side.
  • The following procedure is for the LH side.
  • The front speed sensor rotor is a component of the front axle hub sub-assembly. If the front speed sensor rotor is malfunctioning, replace the front axle hub sub-assembly.

PROCEDURE

1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL

3. SEPARATE FRONT FENDER LINER

4. REMOVE FRONT SPEED SENSOR

(1) Turn back the front fender liner.

(2) Disconnect the connector.

(3) Disengage the 2 clamps from the Toyota Prius vehicle body.

(4) Remove the 2 bolts and separate front speed sensor.

(1) Remove the bolt and separate the front flexible hose and front speed sensor clamp from the front shock absorber assembly.

(1) Disengage the clamp from the front shock absorber assembly.

(2) Remove the bolt and front speed sensor from the steering knuckle.

NOTICE:

  • Keep the tip of the front speed sensor and installation hole free of foreign matter.
  • Do not rotate or apply excessive force to the front speed sensor when removing it from the steering knuckle. Rotating or applying excessive force may result in damage to the front speed sensor.

Installation

HINT:

  • Use the same procedure for the RH side and LH side.

  • The front speed sensor rotor is a component of the front axle hub sub-assembly. If the front speed sensor rotor is malfunctioning, replace the front axle hub sub-assembly.

Tightening torque for "Major areas involving basic Toyota Prius vehicle performance such as moving/turning/stopping" : N*m (kgf*cm, ft.*lbf)

N*m (kgf*cm, ft.*lbf): Specified torque

PROCEDURE

1. INSTALL FRONT SPEED SENSOR

NOTICE:

Do not twist the front speed sensor wire harness when installing it.

(1) Install the front speed sensor to the steering knuckle with the bolt.

Torque:

8.5 N·m {87 kgf·cm, 75 in·lbf}

NOTICE:

  • Keep the tip of the front speed sensor and installation hole free of foreign matter.
  • Firmly insert the front speed sensor body into the steering knuckle before tightening the bolt.
  • After installing the front speed sensor to the steering knuckle, make sure that there is no clearance between the front speed sensor stay and steering knuckle. Also make sure that no foreign matter is stuck between the parts.

(2) Engage the clamp to the front shock absorber assembly.

(1) Engage the 2 hooks to the front shock absorber assembly.

(2) Install the front speed sensor clamp and front flexible hose to the front shock absorber assembly with the bolt.

Torque:

29 N·m {296 kgf·cm, 21 ft·lbf}

(1) Engage the hook to the Toyota Prius vehicle body.

(2) Install the front speed sensor with the 2 bolts.

Torque:

8.5 N·m {87 kgf·cm, 75 in·lbf}

(1) Engage the 2 clamps to the vehicle body.

(2) Connect the connector.
